Why Change?
I designed our original logo a few years back - I am in no way a designer, I just dabble here and there as a lot of people do. While the logo I came up with worked well on the business card, and to some extent on the web, then it only ever looked right on a dark background. I don't know why, but it bothered me - as it meant our stationery had to have a dark band accross the top just to house the logo!
Choosing a Designer
We spent a long time looking for a designer and getting quotes. A lot of designers are too busy (nice for them!) and had long lead times, a lot of others were simply too expensive - we didn't particularly fancy spending £10k on a new logo!
Finally we cut it down to a short list and made our choice - in the end we chose J.Pink Design - we liked his swift responses, shorter lead time (i.e. < 6 months!) and the fact that he didn't put a limit on the number of iterations the design could take.
The Process
First up was a conversation with the team to finalise what we wanted the new logo to be like. This is harder than it sounds - getting a group of people to a consensus is tough work. We then had a conversation with Jon and conveyed our thoughts and he got cracking.
There were a total of 8 iterations from initial ideas through to final design. With each iteration we got together to review the design and decide what we liked and disliked - this was fed back into the process.
In the end it turned out that we actually wanted an evolution of our current logo rather than something completely new or abstract. We also kept some of the colours that we already used, while adding in some new ones
One final touch was to pop some christmas hats on given the time of year - and Rob sprinkled some snow flakes on the website!
Jon's now in the process of designing our stationery and then our corporate refresh will be complete!
